The new Current TV (Sky 183, Virgin 155) season of Rebels features young at heart hip-hop grannies from China “breaking phat onez” and declaring war on those who believe hip-hop is just a youth movement. The hip hop septuagenarians are just a segment of the three one hour blocks to be broadcast Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd November.

Screening at 10pm, this new season exposes individuals and groups in society who defy convention and embrace individuality.

Later films introduce figures including Kimberley Jaw, an overweight dancer who dispels body fascism to dance for Nike; Dan Edge, the UK’s only disabled wrestler, who not only has to fight his able bodied opponents, but also combat the challenges of living with cerebral palsy, and a techno rebel who decides to experience a technology free existence, abandoning every essence of electronic influence.

It might not be Quintessential, but it’s certainly unmissable.
