Doddy Statue

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

kendodd.jpgNot before time, Ken Dodd is soon to be honoured in statue form.

The distinctive comic - the last vestige of the music hall era -  is to be unveiled greeting late Labour MP Bessie Braddock and has as been commissioned by Merseytravel and will be designed by Liverpool-based artist Tom Murphy.

It will be situated in the city’s Lime Street Station.

Neil Scales, Merseytravel chief executive, said: “This is our personal tribute to a man who continues to bring laughter to millions of people.

“Lime Street is one of our most important gateways and, in terms of public art on our network; this will be one of the jewels in our crown.

“Doddy and Battling Bessie will certainly provide a unique welcoming committee!”

You can’t fault them, can you?

(I wonder how long it will be before Vic & Bob are honoured in Teesside or Durham…?)

kendodd.jpgThere’s nothing better in the summer months that to get away to the seaside and do things that you wouldn’t normally - such as visit a live comedy show.

You can go to Blackpool, Brighton, Torquay, Scarborough - they all run shows by old hands at end of the pier, old fashioned comedy.

They’ve all done it, from the unfashionable Cannon & Ball to legends like Ken Dodd, Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper - the list goes on.

Comedy has a long tradition in Blackpool, which has its own comedy club, while this summer sees acts as diverse as Roy “Chubby” Brown, Billy Pearce and Ricky Tomlinson.

Whatever treasures are to be found in Greece, Spain and Turkey, none of them can add the tradition of live comedy shows to sun, sea and English fryups.

Ken Dodd on BBC 4

kendodd.jpgAs part of the Curse of Comedy season on BBC Four, British Comedy legend – and I use the word with precision – Ken Dodd discusses his 50-year career and the influences of his comedy style.

Premiering tonight at 11.30pm, the show features archive footage as well as material from the star’s latest tour.

Dodd was born in 1927, and has been in showbusiness since 1954.  With over 50 years of experience, and hailing from Knotty Ash in Liverpool, Dodd is perfectly placed to present The History of Liverpool Comedians at St Georges Hall in the city on 1st and 2nd April.

This is a rare opportunity to see  master at work - don’t miss it.
