Would I Lie To You? Mitchell is the Star

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

mitchell.jpgA superb episode of Would I Lie To You? this week proved without a shadow of a doubt that despite the dry acerbic put downs of Angus Deayton and the cheerful northern humour of Lee Mack, David Mitchell is without a doubt the show’s star.

Not bad going either, as this week he was up against Hugh Dennis, no stranger to comedy panel game shows, and quite a good liar, it turns out.

And despite losing to Lee Mack’s team, Mitchell - accompanied by Peep Show co-star Olivia Colman and Peter Serafinowicz - was the best value of the evening once more, with several accusatory rants against the obvious lies of Lee Mack and his team.

It’s like Call My Bluff with content.

I would lie to you…

wouldilietoyou.jpgAngus Deayton and a host of guests return this Friday at 9pm with a second series of Would I Lie To You? the comedy panel gameshow that constantly evokes memories of the Charles and Eddie hit from 1991.

Accompanied by team captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack, this week sees Rob Brydon and Robert Webb, Gabby Logan and Krishnan Guru-Murthy join in the fun. If you haven’t seen it before, it goes something like this:

Two teams compete head-to-head with each player revealing incredible facts and (at times woefully) embarrassing personal tales for the consideration of the opposing team. Some of these yarns are true; some are not, and it’s down to the panellists to separate the facts from the fabrications. Think Call My Bluff without the archaisms and with laughs.

Lee Mack Speaks

Friday, June 6th, 2008

leemack.gifAs part of his recent appearance as host of Have I Got News for You, Lee Mack spoke to the BBC website for the show. One particular question stands out:

You were sacked from your job as a blue coat at Pontin’s for appearing on stage drunk. Was it a good show?

I was very pissed so I can’t remember that much about the show. It wasn’t because I got drunk that I was sacked, it was because I was drunk and began to swear. It was my first attempt at stand-up comedy and I got on stage. The big joke the comedians used to do (because this Pontin’s was in Great Yarmouth) was, ‘Where are you from?’ and the audience would say ‘Kent’ because 80 percent of the people were from Kent. And you would say ‘What did you call me?’ and that would always go down a storm. So I got up and said, ‘Anyone here from Kent?’ someone went, ‘Yes’ and I said, ‘Well I’ve heard you’re a bunch of c*****’.

There’s more via the link, as well as a chat with one guest from each of the shows recent episodes - looks like tonights guests incidentally are Ian McMillan and Kate Silverton, with guest host Jeremy Clarkson.

Lee Mack on Have I Got News For You!

leemack.gifFollowing in the footsteps of Bill Bailey, Brian Blessed and Kirsty Young in this series, top standup comic Lee Mack is in the hotseat this week as he asks the questions and attempts to keep Paul Merton in check.

I can only forsee some superb comedy, to be frank - they are two of the countries best comedic minds and sticking them in the same room together can only be a good thing!

It’s wonderful to see, too, the series continuing to be as strong as it was when it first began.  Angus Deayton seems a distant memory now, and somehow Ian Hislop has become funnier.  Paul Merton’s flights of fancy may be less in-depth in the broadcast versions these days, but the whole package is a tight, self contained piece of news and politics expertly ripped to shreds, and is a please to watch every week

Don’t forget to catch up on the HIGNFY webisode, which include footage not seen on the Friday evening broadcast.
