Gervais’ Millions

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

rickygervais.jpgNot content with bending the USA to his whimsical will, Ricky Gervais has moved beyond the realm of the former Iron Curtain. It’s true - David Brentski will soon become a star in Russia just as he did in the US and of course the UK before that.

The Russian version of The Office - to be known as Ofis, so I’m informed - is apparently just the latest in a line of British comedies that have been adapted for cabbage and beetroot consumers on the streets of Moscow and St Petersberg.

No, it seems that there is also a version of Little Britain - Nasha Russia - a character called Ivan Dulin, who is… the “only gay in the factory”.

Ricky Gervais - GTA IV Cameo

Monday, April 21st, 2008

rickygervais.jpgNever one to let a bit of ingenious self-publicity get in the way of his credibility, Ricky Gervais has revealed that he is appearing in Grand Theft Auto IV.

At last, a reason not to buy it!

According to VideoGamer:

Gervais will be found in Liberty City’s comedy club performing a short stand-up routine featuring three minutes of new material plus extracts from his Fame tour.

“It’s a first - which always interests me,” said Gervais. “It was shot in New York, my favourite place in the world, and I got to wear a tight lycra suit as part of the digital process. No, hold on, that wasn’t so good.

“Unfortunately they captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher. It is seriously a big deal, though. Games have outsold Hollywood for the past few years so it’s nice to be a small part of that.”

So from April 29th on PS3 and Xbox 360 you can own a piece of comedy history.

You poor, poor bastards.

Corporate Comedy

Monday, April 14th, 2008

brigstocke.jpegIf it wasn’t sickening enough to see that Marcus Brigstocke hosts an annual comedy festival at a ski resort, the old corporate gig seems to be raising its profile, with a recent business course from LearnDirect employing the services of comedy actors Ricky Gervais, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French and James Nesbitt.

I mean - yes, I obviously sound extremely working class saying this - but come on, have some integrity!

I could accept perhaps a small gig in the Alps.  Perhaps a course on comedy employing the services of these famous names.

But business?  Ski resort comedy festivals?

What next, Edinburgh Festival moves to an ice palace, or Monte Carlo?

These people know who they are, and they should be ashamed of themselves.  It is making a mockery of the comedy industry, and you should all think very carefully about what you’re doing.

Ricky Gervais Tribute Limps Home with 1.6 millionth of a viewer

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Talentless TubsterAhh the Gervais bubble - could it be about to burst?

It seems that the recent tribute to a comedian who has been with us five minutes attracted just 1.6 million viewers, an insignificant fraction of the available figures. As TV Scoop put it:

Did you watch it and enjoy it? Well, you were almost on your own as the show limped in last in the ratings battle, trundling in with a pathetic 1.6 million viewers. If you want some perspective on it, despite a Radio Times cover, saturated TV spots and publicity, the show was beaten by Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach

The reviewer then goes on to point out that “New Heroes” should refer to just that - upcoming giants. Sure, it might be difficult to judge, but comics like Frankie Boyle are on television far too rarely, and restricting them to panel shows isn’t a way forward.

And in any case, Gervais has all but abandoned the UK. He’ll be enjoying a very big, very nice pool in LA inside 5 years in a grandiose house that he won’t want to leave.

What is of particular note is that Channel 4 gave us Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Comic Strip; they shouldn’t be farming out rubbish like this under the guise of new programming when the broadcast comprises 70% old clips.
