Steven Moffat takes on Doctor Who

News of comedy writer Steven Moffat’s role as Doctor Who Executive Producer and chief writer has spread across the web today, with the announcement first revealed by The Guardian, and the BBC confirming the news later on.

The current executive producer Russell T Davies complemented his replacement - writer of Doctor Who adventures The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink and The Empty Child - noting:

“It’s been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can’t wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!”

Moffat was similarly ebullient, and slyly revealed it was all part of his plan…

“My entire career has been a secret plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back because the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven.

“Anyway, I’m glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it’s a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television.”

Steven Moffat has been duly honoured for his work on Who, but is best known as the writer of comedy and comedy-drama series Jekyll, Press Gang, Joking Apart and Coupling, as well as Chalk, episodes of Murder Most Horrid and Stay Lucky.
